What should I expect from my first KonMari® Tidying Lesson?
I am looking forward to meeting you for our first lesson together & am excited to be joining you on your tidying journey.
Preparation
Please see ‘How to prepare for your first KonMari® Tidying Lesson’ in order to maximise our time together.
Introduction & Vision
On the day, before we begin to tidy, we will sit together to discuss the vision for your ideal lifestyle & living environment. This is a crucial step in moving forward & is the foundation for your tidying journey.
We will review the Client Agreement. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
The taking of photos during the lesson is an incredibly powerful tool to monitor your progression as you tidy. ‘Before & After’ photos are particularly useful & we will discuss the use of photos & social media content during my visit.
Home Tour
We’ll then take a tour around your home to gain an understanding of storage space & habits.
With your permission, we’ll take photos at this time, as a reference for future use & mark progress.
Home Greeting
Based on the etiquette of entering a shrine, this is a ritual of reflection & appreciation for your home.
We kneel together in a central space to take a quiet moment & set our intentionality for the journey ahead.
The tidying begins
The initial category in the KonMari Method® is Clothing & this is where we will start in most cases.
Please remember that we will only be dealing with items that belong to you!
We will remove all items of clothing from your wardrobe, drawers & other storage spaces, creating a large pile. By pulling all of your items together in one place, you can more accurately understand every item that you own. This acts as a re-set button and motivates a change. This brings your relationship with your things into focus & creates a visual awareness of your items.
We then work through each item in turn, asking the question “Does it spark joy?”. This is a key principle of the KonMari Method® & we will work together to hone your joy-checking skills. Any items that you choose to let go of, are released with gratitude by thanking the item. We work together to responsibly pass on the items that you choose to discard.
All decisions are made by you. My role is to support you in the process & work together. The decision to keep or discard is always down to the individual & I will guide you through the journey. Be prepared to let some things go.
If you have a spare room, this is the best place for us to begin this process. Please be aware that depending on the amount of items an individual owns & the speed at which decisions are made, sometimes it takes more than one or two sessions to joy-check all your items of clothing.
Storing
Once we have joy checked the items, we work through storing the items, via hanging & the trademark KonMari® Fold. Using the file folding technique allows you to take advantage of maximising drawer space & promotes easy access by storing folded clothes on edge.
We re-purpose boxes found within the home to store items to create a more joyful space.
Breaks
Tidying is hands-on & decision making can also be tiring. We will have a short break during the tidying lesson so you can have something to eat/drink & keep your energy levels up.
Some clients like to take this time for themselves whilst others like to sit together & chat. I will be led by you & how you feel on the day.
Concluding the Lesson
We work out plans to discard, donate or sell the items that don’t spark joy. Based on your progress during this first lesson, we’ll discuss next steps to continue with your tidying journey.
During the KonMari® Tidying festival, please bear in mind that the process can create temporary disarray whilst we discard & tidy. It’s all part of the journey!
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions.
